The First Rev. Vartan Hartunian Annual Lecture - NAASR

Nazi Looted Art Recovery as a Model for Recovery of Armenian Genocide Looted Art
5 mai 2026   7:30 PM
NAASR Vartan Gregorian Building
395 Concord Ave., Belmont, MA
Massachusetts - United States

A Lecture by Dr. Taner Akçam and Dr. Michael Bazyler

This program will touch on UCLA's Armenian Genocide Looted Art Research Project (AGLARP), which brings together law students and art students—many of them Armenian-Americans—to search museum and institutional collections for Armenian art objects, aiming to identify objects looted during or after the Armenian Genocide and create a comprehensive list of all Armenian art in the United States and their provenances.

Professor Michael Bazyler will discuss how models of Nazi-looted art recovery can inform this work, highlighting the legal and historical dimensions of restitution efforts. Dr. Taner Akçam will provide additional context on the Armenian Genocide and the scholarly significance of this unprecedented initiative.

Taner Akçam is the inaugural director of the Armenian Genocide Research Program of the Promise Armenian Institute at UCLA. His most recent publication is as editor of 'The Great Crime' by Aram Andonian: Talaat Pasha's Orders on the Armenian Genocide and Naim Bey's Testimony (2026).

Michael Bazyler is professor of law and the 1939 Law Scholar in Holocaust and Human Rights Studies at Chapman University. His books include Holocaust Justice: The Battle for Restitution in America's Courts (2003) and Holocaust, Genocide and the Law: A Quest for Justice in a Post-Holocaust World (2016).

This lecture is presented as part of a three-event series on May 1, 4, and 5 that is co-sponsored by the Armenian Genocide Research Program (AGRP), The Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center (MEMEAC) at the CUNY Graduate Center, NYC Times Square Armenian Genocide Committee, and St. Leon Armenian Church.

In-person at the NAASR Vartan Gregorian Building, 395 Concord Ave., Belmont, MA, and streaming live on Zoom and YouTube.

Rev. Vartan Hartunian, the son of Abraham and Shushan Hartunian, was born February 11, 1915, in Marash, and survived the Armenian Genocide, escaping with his family in 1922 during the burning of Smyrna. He translated his father's memoir, Neither to Laugh Nor To Weep, from the original Armenian manuscript into English. Published in 1968 by Beacon Press and in subsequent editions by NAASR's Armenian Heritage Press, this well-known primary source for the study of the Armenian Genocide has been translated into multiple languages. A lecturer and spokesperson who worked to expose the denial of the Armenian Genocide, and a dedicated NAASR member and supporter for more than 40 years, this annual lecture continues his legacy of integrity and dedication to truth in history.

This program is open to all free of charge. A reception will follow the program.
